The Targeted Offensive Against American Cloud Infrastructure

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has announced a series of military strikes directed at data centers operated by major American technology firms in the Middle East. On Thursday, the IRGC claimed to have successfully hit a facility associated with Oracle in Dubai, framing the attack as a direct confrontation with U.S. corporate interests in the region. Although the Dubai government issued a prompt denial of any such damage, reports from the Tasnim news agency indicated that an Amazon facility in Bahrain was also in the crosshairs of the Iranian military. This escalation marks a significant shift in regional warfare, moving beyond traditional military targets to focus on the digital backbone of the global economy.

Verification and Contradiction in Regional Damage Reports

The scale of the impact remains a subject of conflicting official accounts between the affected nations and independent investigators. While authorities in the United Arab Emirates have not acknowledged a successful strike, the Ministry of Interior in Bahrain confirmed that an Iranian attack resulted in a fire at a facility belonging to Batelco. As the nation’s largest telecommunications provider, Batelco serves as the primary host for Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure in the region. An investigation by Bellingcat suggested that official reports may be minimizing the actual level of destruction, noting that not all Iranian strikes are being intercepted despite government claims of successful defense measures.

Strategic Motivations and the List of Accused Corporations

This wave of attacks follows a formal declaration by the IRGC naming several American corporations as facilitators of U.S. and Israeli military operations. The list of accused entities is extensive, including Apple, Boeing, Cisco, Google, HP, IBM, Meta, and Microsoft. Oracle was specifically singled out due to its cloud and artificial intelligence contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense and the longstanding ties between its chairman, Larry Ellison, and Israel. The Iranian military’s strategy appears to involve a broad economic assault, as they also reported strikes against aluminum and steel industries in the UAE and Bahrain, as well as defense manufacturing sites in Israel.
