Retaliation and Sea Mine Threats
In a significant hardening of their stance, Iran's Defense Council warned that any attempt to attack Iran’s coasts or islands would result in the entire Gulf being mined.
Symmetry of Deterrence: "If you hit electricity, we hit electricity," the IRGC statement read. However, they appeared to retract earlier threats to target water desalination plants, characterizing those claims as "lies" from the U.S. administration.
Mining the Gulf: Tehran warned it would deploy various types of sea mines, including floating mines released from the coast, effectively turning the entire Persian Gulf into a restricted zone similar to the current state of the Strait of Hormuz.
Conditional Passage: While the Strait remains effectively closed to "enemies," Iranian officials claim it remains open to neutral shipping, including Indian and Pakistani vessels.
