A Reward for "No to War" Rhetoric
The concession is widely viewed as a "thank you" to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has been among the most critical Western leaders regarding the current conflict.
Diplomatic Defiance: Spain has consistently denounced the U.S.-Israeli strikes as "reckless and illegal" and refused to allow U.S. forces to use the joint military bases at Rota and Morón for offensive operations against Iran.
Sanctions Break: While other EU nations like France and Sweden have stepped up efforts to detain the Russian "shadow fleet" supporting Moscow, Spain has prioritized de-escalation, even withdrawing its ambassador from Israel earlier this month.
Energy Security: The move coincides with reports that Algeria is boosting natural gas supplies to Spain via the Medgaz pipeline by 12.5% as a similar reward for Madrid’s neutral stance.
