Escalation During a Standard Speeding Stop
A routine traffic stop on January 16 in North Texas escalated into a physical confrontation that has now drawn significant public scrutiny and a city council debate. Taneisha Thompson was pulled over by Hurst police for speeding, an encounter that Thompson admits became tense after she received a citation. According to reports, the situation deteriorated when Thompson informed the officer she did not wish to keep the ticket and threw the document out of her vehicle window. This act of littering prompted the officer to initiate an arrest, leading to a struggle as multiple officers attempted to remove Thompson from the driver’s seat.
Conflicting Claims of Excessive Force
Thompson spoke publicly for the first time this week, detailing the physical injuries she sustained during the arrest, which was witnessed by her 15-year-old son from the front passenger seat. She reported suffering a black eye that required stitches and extensive bruising across her body. Thompson expressed that the incident has left her in a state of constant fear regarding law enforcement. However, the Hurst Police Department’s internal affairs division concluded its investigation by determining that the claims of excessive force were unfounded, asserting that the physical measures taken were necessary to secure a resisting subject.
Hurst Police Department Defends Corporal's Actions
Hurst Police Chief Billy Keadle released a video statement on YouTube alongside footage from three different body cameras to provide what he described as a more accurate account of the incident. Keadle argued that clips previously circulating on social media were edited to misrepresent the officers and mislead the community. The Chief stated that Corporal Morgan acted in full accordance with department policy and state law. By releasing the full spectrum of body camera angles, the department aimed to demonstrate the sequence of events that led to the decision to use force to remove Thompson from her vehicle.
