Causes of the Scheduling Disruptions
Interislander services have been strained over the past 48 hours, with the official website reporting delays of up to three hours and 45 minutes for daylight sailings. These hold-ups are primarily due to the "knock-on" effect of Bluebridge’s Connemara ferry being sidelined for 11 days. During that period, a vast number of passengers and commercial freight services were forced to rebook with Interislander, creating a bottleneck at the terminals.
Interislander spokesperson Taru Sawhney explained that the sheer volume of vehicles and cargo has slowed turnaround times in port. While night-time sailings have been less affected—averaging delays of roughly 45 minutes—the daytime schedule remains under pressure as crews work to manage the overflow.
Coordination with Bluebridge and Recovery Efforts
The return of Bluebridge’s Connemara to service on Wednesday night has begun to alleviate some of the strain on the Cook Strait crossing. However, because the vessel was out of action for nearly two weeks, the backlog of freight remains substantial. Interislander is prioritizing communication with impacted customers, contacting them directly if their specific sailings are running behind schedule.
KiwiRail remains optimistic that the disruption is temporary. Historically, freight volumes drop significantly over the Easter weekend, which typically allows the fleet to "catch up" and return to a synchronized schedule. The company anticipates that all services will be running on time by the end of the week.
