Primary Long Range Detection and Tracking
At the heart of the S-400’s sensor suite is the 91N6 panoramic surveillance radar, colloquially known as "Big Bird." This system provides wide-area airspace scanning and serves as the primary tool for target acquisition at distances reaching 600 kilometers for large-scale aerial assets such as airborne warning and control systems. The 91N6 is designed with advanced electronic protection to resist jamming and is capable of simultaneously tracking hundreds of targets. This data is fed in real-time to the 55K6 command post, which acts as the system's brain, fusing inputs from various sensors to prioritize threats and manage engagement protocols for the launcher units.
Precision Guidance and High Resolution Engagement
For the terminal phase of an intercept, the S-400 utilizes the 92N6 "Grave Stone" X-band fire-control radar. This high-resolution system is prized for its ability to guide multiple interceptor missiles against several simultaneous targets while providing mid-course updates. With a tracking range of 600 kilometers for large aircraft and ballistic missiles, the 92N6 ensures precision targeting in complex environments.
