On May 9, 2023, Karnin Petera was part of a group of 17 students and instructors who entered Abbey Caves. Despite days of heavy rain beforehand, the trip went ahead.
The Incident: While inside, the group was caught in a rapid surge of water. Karnin was swept away and trapped between rocks.
The Rescue: It took specialist recovery teams 10 hours to locate his body using underwater cameras.
Legal Aftermath: The school board has already been prosecuted and ordered to pay over $500,000 in reparations.
