Strategic Commitment to Inclusive Democracy

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has reinforced its mandate to provide an accessible voting environment for all citizens ahead of the governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. During a sensitization program held in Osogbo on Tuesday, Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Mutiu Agboke emphasized that the disability community is an integral component of Nigeria’s democratic framework. The commission’s current focus centers on ensuring that physical conditions do not serve as a barrier to political participation or the selection of state leadership.

Decentralization of Voter Registration Services

A key component of the new strategy involves the devolution of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise from local government offices directly to the Registration Areas at the ward level. This decentralization is specifically designed to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges who previously faced difficulties traveling long distances to update their details. This initiative aims to capture first time voters who have reached the age of 18 and allow existing voters to transfer or correct their registration data with greater ease and proximity to their homes.

Deployment of Specialized Assistive Technologies

To facilitate an independent and secret ballot for all, INEC has committed to deploying a suite of assistive devices across polling units in Osun State. These tools include Braille ballot guides for visually impaired voters, magnifying glasses for those with low vision, and large print materials. Furthermore, the commission plans to implement priority voting arrangements, ensuring that Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) are not subjected to long wait times, thereby reducing the physical strain of the voting process on election day.
