The Art of the Pour: Etiquette as Social Philosophy
At the core of Kim’s work is the assertion that drinking soju is less about alcohol consumption and more about a "process of joyful consideration." The book meticulously details traditional etiquette, such as the 10-step process for pouring and receiving drinks with both hands to show respect to elders. For many international observers, these gestures might seem purely formal, but Kim explains that they reflect a deeper Korean social philosophy. These actions—subtly checking if a companion's glass is empty or turning one's head away when drinking—are presented as essential tools for building business, diplomatic, and personal relationships in Korea.
From Research to Global Recognition
The publication is the result of seven years of intensive research that began in 2014 when Kim, a former media professional and PR manager at Sungkyunkwan University, began documenting the social rituals he observed in daily life. His expertise eventually led him to a featured role on the KBS and Netflix documentary "Soju Rhapsody," where he discussed the spirit’s role as a "bridge" between people. By handling the writing, illustration, layout, and editing himself, Kim has created a visually driven narrative that translates the unspoken rules of the Korean table into an accessible format for those unfamiliar with the culture.
Divergent Perspectives: Local vs. International Reception
Interestingly, Kim notes a distinct difference in how his work is perceived by local versus foreign readers. While many Koreans view these customs as second nature and perhaps too "ordinary" for a dedicated book, international readers have responded with enthusiasm. For foreigners, the book demystifies behaviors they may have observed in Korean cinema or restaurants but felt hesitant to ask about. By providing a "why" behind the "how," Kim helps bridge the gap between curiosity and cultural competency, making the intricate world of K-drinking accessible to a global audience.
