Defense of Institutional Integrity

The Ijumu Development Union (IDU) has formally responded to recent agitations for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN. At a press conference held in Lokoja on Monday, IDU President Ahmed-Ade Fatai described the calls for Amupitan’s resignation as the work of mischief makers who do not represent the collective will of the Nigerian people. Fatai asserted that the INEC boss has committed no offense and should not be used as a "sacrificial lamb" for the selfish agendas of specific political interest groups.

Academic and Professional Pedigree

In its defense, the group highlighted Professor Amupitan’s extensive background as a distinguished academic and legal professional. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Amupitan is regarded by the IDU as a leading expert in constitutional and electoral law. The union emphasized that his appointment was based on merit and competence rather than ethnic or political considerations, citing his "unquestionable character" as a cornerstone of his leadership at the electoral body.

Rejection of Ethnic Marginalization

As a "true and proud son of the Ijumu Kingdom," the union expressed concern that Amupitan might be targeted due to his minority status. Fatai argued that punishing competence based on a person’s origin is a disservice to the nation. He maintained that the Chairman’s primary duty is to safeguard the ballot and protect the votes of over 200 million Nigerians, a task the union believes he is fulfilling with neutrality, transparency, and fairness.
