A Paradigm Shift in Federal Policing
The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has officially signaled its readiness to embrace the decentralization of law enforcement. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu, speaking at the Presidential Villa following his swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, clarified that the federal force views state police as a partner in progress rather than a threat to its authority. Disu emphasized that "state police has come to stay" and indicated that his administration would proactively assist in making the transition successful, marking a significant departure from previous institutional skepticism.
Establishing the Framework for Partnership
To ensure the police are central to the legislative and operational transition, IGP Disu disclosed that he has already established a specialized internal committee. This body is tasked with reviewing the proposed state police framework to ensure the professional expertise of the federal force informs the new system. "We don’t want it to appear as if others are taking decisions while we, the most concerned stakeholders, are not involved," Disu stated. He framed the development as an issue of partnership, asserting that the creation of state-level commands would complement federal efforts in an increasingly complex security landscape.
Intelligence-Led Management of Global Spillover
Addressing immediate security concerns, the IGP highlighted the force's focus on "intelligence policing" to manage local repercussions of international conflicts, particularly those in the Middle East. Acknowledging Nigeria's diverse religious landscape and groups that may pay allegiance to overseas developments, Disu assured the public that patrols have been intensified. The force is currently engaging with community and religious leaders to prevent civil unrest, emphasizing a professional approach to maintaining law and order amidst potential ideological tensions.
