Strategic Implementation of Buffer Zones

The Israeli defense establishment has concluded that physical separation is the only viable method to prevent cross-border raids, rapes, and hostage-taking. Drawing on lessons from the October 7 massacre, the IDF is now replicating the "Yellow Zone" model used in Gaza along the Lebanese frontier. This strategy involves the creation of a sterile area several kilometers deep where all structures used by Hezbollah for surveillance or weapon storage are being dismantled. Unlike the security zone maintained between 1985 and 2000, the current objective is to ensure the area remains entirely depopulated, removing the cover provided by civilian proximity.

The Failure of the November 2024 Ceasefire

The current military push is a direct result of the Lebanese Army’s inability to fulfill its obligations under the previous November 2024 ceasefire agreement. That deal tasked Beirut with clearing Hezbollah infrastructure south of the Litani River; however, recent intelligence suggests that the militant group not only retained its facilities but successfully redeployed fighters under the nose of the Lebanese state. Israeli officials have expressed deep skepticism regarding the Lebanese Army's commitment, noting structural issues including low pay and sectarian fragmentation that have led some soldiers to cooperate with Hezbollah rather than disarm them.

Operation Roaring Lion and the Weakened Iranian Proxy

The current ground maneuver, dubbed Operation Roaring Lion, seeks to capitalize on a moment of unprecedented weakness for both Hezbollah and its patron, Iran. With Hezbollah’s leadership decimated and Iranian resources stretched thin by a parallel US-Israeli air campaign, Jerusalem perceives a narrow window to shift the internal Lebanese balance of power. By flattening urban terrain in "contact villages" such as those overlooking Metulla and Shlomi, the IDF aims to strip Hezbollah of the tactical advantages it has enjoyed for decades, regardless of whether a formal diplomatic address in Beirut eventually takes control.
