Ending the Drought and Reclaiming Form

Daniil Medvedev’s 2026 campaign has seen a dramatic turnaround after a period of inconsistency. Before his recent success, the 2021 US Open champion had endured a 24-month drought from Masters 1000 finals. That dry spell ended at Indian Wells, where Medvedev reminded the tour of his elite capabilities by snapping Carlos Alcaraz’s dominant win streak. This resurgence follows his first singles title in nearly 30 months at the Astana Open in late 2025 and a flawless ATP 500 victory in Dubai earlier this year.

Confidence as the Key Driver

In a candid interview with Tennis TV, Medvedev emphasized the psychological nature of the sport. He noted that while early tournament exits allow for more practice, they do little for a player’s mental state. "When you are high on confidence, everything goes in, everything is fluid," Medvedev remarked. He attributed his current "fluidity" to his performance in Dubai and Indian Wells, stating that when he plays his best tennis, he remains one of the toughest players to beat on the ATP circuit.

The Sinner Rivalry and Miami Projections

Medvedev’s only recent stumble came in the Indian Wells final against Jannik Sinner, a tight 7-6(6), 7-6(4) loss where the Italian won the final seven points to secure the title. Despite the defeat, Medvedev remains undeterred. As a former Miami Open champion (2023), he is projected to meet Sinner again in the semi-finals of this year's tournament. To get there, he must navigate a quarter that includes German star Alexander Zverev, starting with an opening match against Rei Sakamoto.
