Modernizing the Feature Phone at MWC 2026

In an era dominated by high-end foldables and flagship slabs, HMD (Human Mobile Devices) took the stage at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 to champion the "under-connected" user. The company announced plans to integrate modern smartphone features into its upcoming feature phone lineup throughout 2026. By bringing a digital wallet, an AI assistant, and video calling to budget-friendly hardware, HMD is attempting to provide essential digital access to millions of users who prefer the tactile nature and battery life of traditional phones but require modern services to participate in the digital economy.

Blockchain-Backed Digital Wallet for Secure Remittances

One of the most significant additions is a built-in digital wallet developed in partnership with fintech firm Kivi3 and blockchain company Polygon Labs. The service is designed to allow users to receive, store, and cash out funds securely through local payment systems. Launching first in India during the first half of 2026, the wallet features device-level security with mandatory PIN protection. This move is specifically aimed at rural areas where a feature phone is often a user's primary piece of technology and serves as a critical tool for financial inclusion and cross-border remittances.

Voice-Activated AI and Elderly Companionship

HMD is also pushing AI into the feature phone form factor through a collaboration with India’s Sarvam AI. The new voice-activated AI assistant will allow users to bypass complex menus to perform basic tasks like making calls, setting alarms, and toggling the torch. Beyond utility, HMD is piloting an "AI companion" specifically tailored for elderly users. Developed with InTouch, this service focuses on providing companionship and simple query handling. Trials are expected to begin in Europe first, catering to an aging demographic that may find modern smartphone interfaces overwhelming but could benefit from a communicative AI on a familiar device.
