Local Subsidiary Distances Itself from European Advertising Trials
The user experience for Hisense television owners in South Africa will remain free of the intrusive advertising formats recently reported in several international markets. Tech publications recently highlighted instances in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain where users encountered non skippable advertisements during basic functions such as switching inputs or navigating home screens. However, Hisense South Africa has clarified that these incidents were limited market tests conducted overseas and do not reflect the strategy for the local market. According to company officials, the goal remains to provide a seamless viewing experience that does not interrupt device functionality.
Strategic Use of Non Intrusive Banners to Fund Free Content
While forced full screen ads are being rejected locally, the company continues to utilize static and short video banners on its Home OS, formerly known as VIDAA. Luna Nortje, the deputy general manager at Hisense South Africa, explained that these promotional placements are purposefully designed to be non intrusive. These banners occupy less than a third of the home screen and are intended to aid in content discovery rather than disrupt the user. Crucially, this advertising model serves as the primary funding mechanism for a bouquet of free content, allowing the manufacturer to subsidize access to various digital services for its users.
Expansion of Free Local and International Broadcasting Channels
The revenue generated from the current unobtrusive advertising model has enabled a significant expansion of free viewing options for South African households. Currently, VIDAA powered televisions provide access to over 20 local channels and 30 international selections, including specialized content from FIFA, Bloomberg, and major European football clubs. This subsidized model follows a global shift toward smart TV ecosystems that prioritize free or subsidized content access through controlled advertising. According to Nortje, this approach ensures that all standard TV functions can be enjoyed without a requirement to interact with promotional material.
