Fatal Ambush Near Iguobazuwa

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed a deadly attack on a commercial vehicle along the busy Lagos-Benin Expressway. The incident occurred on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at approximately 6:00 pm near the Iguobazuwa axis of the Ore-Benin road. Suspected kidnappers ambushed a bus belonging to GUO Transport Company, which was traveling with five passengers. During the assault, the gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, fatally wounding the driver.

Casualties and Rescued Passengers

The driver of the commercial bus was confirmed dead at the scene, and his remains have since been deposited at a hospital mortuary. One female passenger sustained gunshot injuries during the crossfire but was successfully rescued by responding officers. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical officials state she is currently responding to treatment. Despite the intervention, the attackers managed to seize three other passengers, forcibly leading them into the thick forest bordering the expressway.

Coordinated Rescue Operations Launched

Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police for Edo State, Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate and coordinated rescue mission. Tactical teams, led by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, have been deployed to the Ore-Benin axis. These professional units are receiving active support from local hunters and community vigilante groups who possess intimate knowledge of the local terrain. The primary objective of the operation is the safe release of the three captives and the apprehension of the criminal gang responsible for the ambush.
