The Push for "Granular" Data
The government is seeking high-quality, real-time information to navigate what Jones described as a "fuel fiasco." Specifically, officials are requesting:
Forward Cargo Plans: Detailed schedules of upcoming fuel arrivals.
Ship Manifests: Exact quantities and types of fuel being transported.
Vessel Details: Names and locations of tankers currently in transit to New Zealand.
While Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has characterized the current engagement with fuel companies as "very good," Jones suggested there is reluctance from some companies to share commercially sensitive data in a competitive market. Jones argued that national energy security now trumps any "minor confidentiality matters."
