Judicial Resolution for Violent Confrontation
A legal process spanning several months concluded in Rushville as Trevor Tayle, 19, was sentenced for his role in a violent altercation and a separate felony theft. Tayle was originally facing a charge of attempted first-degree assault after a June 6 encounter that resulted in a man being airlifted to a trauma center. Following negotiations between the defense and the prosecution, Tayle entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree assault. The court ultimately ordered a sentence of 24 months of probation, emphasizing supervised rehabilitation over immediate incarceration.
Details of the June 6 Stabbing
The investigation into Tayle’s actions began in the early morning hours of June 6, when Gordon police officers responded to reports of a group being chased near the NAPA building. According to court records, Tayle and Douglas Charging Thunder were involved in a physical struggle when Tayle used a knife to strike Charging Thunder below the left ear. The victim initially spoke to officers with a blood-soaked shirt, unaware of the severity of the injury until it was pointed out by bystanders. Due to the proximity of the wound to vital arteries, Charging Thunder was stabilized at Gordon Memorial Hospital before being flown to Monument Health in Rapid City for specialized treatment.
Secondary Theft Case at Gordon Livestock Market
In addition to the assault, Tayle was sentenced for a separate criminal episode involving the theft of a high-value vehicle. Shortly after the stabbing incident in June, Tayle and two accomplices stole a pickup truck from the Gordon Livestock Market. The vehicle was valued at over $5,000, which originally led to a charge of theft by unlawful taking. As part of a global plea agreement covering both cases, Tayle pleaded guilty to an amended charge of attempted theft by unlawful taking. The judge issued a second 24-month probation term to run concurrently with the assault sentence.
