The Fatal Encounter in the Sector of Operations
Staff Sgt. Touvel Yosef Lifshiz, a resident of Beit She’an and a member of the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion, was killed during a high-intensity exchange of fire on Tuesday. According to an initial military probe, Lifshiz’s unit identified a cell of Hezbollah operatives moving within their area of operations in a southern Lebanese border village. As the Golani troops moved to engage the cell, they were met with a barrage of small arms fire and anti-tank missiles. Lifshiz was struck and killed instantly, while a fellow officer sustained life-threatening injuries. Four additional soldiers were evacuated to hospitals in northern Israel with light to moderate wounds.
Hezbollah’s Guerilla Tactics Amid the ‘Separate Skirmish’
The death of Staff Sgt. Lifshiz highlights the persistent and lethal nature of the conflict in Lebanon, which President Donald Trump and Israeli leadership have categorized as a "separate skirmish" excluded from the midnight ceasefire with Iran. While the skies over Tehran have fallen silent, the hills of southern Lebanon remain a primary combat zone. Hezbollah continues to utilize a network of tunnels and reinforced civilian structures to launch ambushes against advancing IDF units. The military stated that troops are still operating in the area to "locate and eliminate" the specific cell responsible for Tuesday’s attack, utilizing drone surveillance and localized artillery strikes.
The Rising Toll on the Golani Brigade
The Golani Brigade, one of the IDF’s most storied infantry units, has been at the forefront of the 2026 ground offensive. Staff Sgt. Lifshiz is the 12th soldier killed since the resumption of hostilities on March 2. The 13th Battalion, in particular, has seen heavy engagement in the central sector of the "Blue Line," tasked with dismantling Hezbollah’s Radwan Force infrastructure. The loss of a 20-year-old sergeant has resonated deeply in his hometown of Beit She’an, where local officials described Lifshiz as a dedicated soldier who had been on the front lines since the initial outbreak of the regional war in February.
