Infrastructure Lifelines and Government Support
Regional Development Minister Shane Jones has spearheaded a series of investments aimed at stabilizing the islands' essential services:
Air Chathams: Last Friday, a $17.2 million loan was announced from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to help the airline manage debt and maintain its fleet amid a nationwide fuel crisis.
Maritime Transport: A $24 million contract was signed in September 2025 for a replacement for the Southern Tiare, the islands' 40-year-old supply ship.
Energy & Ports: Funding has been allocated for a new wind turbine farm to reduce reliance on expensive diesel, alongside upgrades to the local wharf and airport.
