The Dissolution Of The Partnership Of Partnerships
According to David Thomas, the partners of DLA Piper have approved a historic reorganization to eliminate the firm’s Swiss verein structure. For years, this model allowed various international branches to operate as separate legal entities under a unified brand, primarily to limit tax exposure across jurisdictions. However, under the new mandate, the firm will transition to a unified global leadership model designed to facilitate more seamless integration between its United States and international branches. This strategic pivot marks a departure from the decentralized "partnership of partnerships" that has characterized many of the world's largest legal institutions.
Implementing A Unified Global Leadership Command
Starting May 1, 2026, a newly formed holding company will assume management of the firm's diverse global interests. According to the source, the leadership team will be headed by global co-CEOs Frank Ryan and Charles Severs, with Ryan also maintaining his position as the global chair. Supporting this executive core, vice chairs have been appointed from the firm’s offices in New York and Austin, Texas. This restructured hierarchy is intended to provide a singular point of accountability, ensuring that the firm's various regional divisions are moving in lockstep with its broader international objectives.
Strategic Alignment Of Compensation And Recruitment
In a recent interview, Ryan and Severs emphasized that the primary motivation for this shift is to better align the business interests of the U.S. and international partnerships. While separate profit pools will be maintained for the immediate future, the firm’s ultimate objective is to establish a single, global profit pool. According to Ryan, this transition is essential to unify how the business rewards its staff and recruits new talent. By removing the barriers inherent in the verein model, DLA Piper aims to create a more cohesive culture where compensation and incentives are standardized across all major legal markets.
