The Collapse of Traditional Maritime Logistics

The ongoing naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz has paralyzed the traditional maritime arteries that German exporters have relied upon for decades to reach the lucrative Gulf markets. Hans-Ulrich Dicke, a projects manager at the logistics firm Derda, confirmed that the direct shipping of containers has become impossible, forcing a daily search for alternative solutions. Initially, logistics companies attempted to pivot to the Port of Fujairah on the UAE’s eastern coast to avoid the conflict zone, but severe congestion has rendered that option increasingly unreliable. Other alternatives, such as the Port of Jeddah, have proven financially unfeasible, with costs reportedly four times higher than pre-war levels.

A Strategic Pivot to the Syrian Corridor

Faced with the potential loss of billions of euros in trade, German logistics firms are now looking toward a surprising geographic solution: a transit route through Syria. Okba Shech Ahmad, business development manager at Roland, noted that more than 50% of German exporting companies are now directly impacted by the 2026 energy and shipping crisis. To mitigate this, firms are developing overland routes that travel from Germany through Türkiye and Syria before reaching destinations like Jordan and Saudi Arabia. This shift utilizes Syria's "very strategic" location, which has become accessible following the stabilization of the region under the transitional administration in Damascus.

The Role of Türkiye as a Logistical Linchpin

The success of the new "land bridge" is entirely dependent on the cooperation and infrastructure of Türkiye. Ahmad emphasized that the Syrian route "will not work" without the Turkish gateway, specifically the Port of Mersin. A popular combined solution involves shipping goods from European ports to Mersin via the Mediterranean, then transferring cargo to trucks for the overland journey through Syria. While this method extends delivery times to approximately 35 days—compared to 21 days for direct overland trucking—it remains the most reliable method for transporting the high-value machinery, automobiles, and chemicals that dominate German-GCC trade.
