The Shift From Keywords to Interest-Based Feeds

Gaming publications have found a critical new lifeline in Google Discover, according to exclusive data shared with GamesBeat. An analysis of 197 gaming websites within the Raptive network, including prominent names like Reset Era and Insider Gaming, shows a 138 percent increase in traffic from the AI-driven feed throughout 2025. Unlike traditional Google Search, which relies on specific keyword queries, Discover operates as a personalized, topical feed served on mobile devices. This fundamental shift allows fans of niche topics, such as "Magic: The Gathering" or specific sub-genres, to encounter content based on their established interests rather than active searching, capturing "eyeballs" that might otherwise be lost to declining editorial search rankings.

Impact of the February 2026 Discover Core Update

The research comes just a month after Google implemented its first-ever core update specifically designed for the Discover platform. While many publishers reported a significant plunge in feed visibility during the second half of 2025, the February update appears to have corrected the course for many smaller creators. Raptive reported a 20 percent spike in gaming websites seeing positive traffic movement immediately following the update. Tom Critchlow, Raptive’s executive vice president of audience growth, noted that the update seems to favor "long tail" websites—smaller, specialized outlets that provide deep coverage on specific topics—over broad, generalist news sites.

Gaming Overindexes Compared to Other Content Categories

Data shows that the gaming and tech sectors are uniquely positioned to benefit from the Discover algorithm. Currently, approximately 50 percent of all tech and gaming traffic in the Raptive network originates from Google Discover. This is significantly higher than other categories; for instance, home and garden websites receive only 15 percent of their traffic from the feed, while arts and creativity sites see about 35 percent. The only sector that currently outperforms gaming in this metric is news and current events, which relies on Discover for a staggering 76 percent of its total traffic, highlighting the platform's role as a primary gateway for timely, trending information.
