The Crown Hill neighborhood of North Seattle is currently dealing with significant infrastructure damage following a series of aggressive copper thefts targeting municipal utility boxes. Residents near Baker Park reported that the facility has been plunged into darkness after thieves pried open electrical units and severed critical wiring. The damage has not only affected local aesthetics but has raised immediate safety concerns for those who frequent the park after sunset. Local resident Clark Scheff discovered the extent of the vandalism late last week, noting that the prying of boxes and the cutting of wires appeared to be a professional and calculated effort to harvest valuable metal.

Real Time Surveillance and Lack of Intervention

The recent wave of thefts was captured in vivid detail by Scheff, who noticed two suspicious individuals operating near NW 85th Street at approximately 2:00 a.m. Using a high-definition traffic camera mounted at his residence, Scheff observed the men using specialized tools to access sidewalk utility boxes. Upon walking outside to investigate, he encountered the suspects actively wrapping roughly 100 feet of wire around their arms. When confronted, one of the men openly admitted they were targeting copper, prompting Scheff to contact 911 in hopes of a swift law enforcement intervention while the crime was still in progress.

Communication Breakdowns During Emergency Calls

Despite the active nature of the crime, the response from emergency dispatchers has become a central point of frustration for the Crown Hill community. Scheff reported that he called 911 twice to provide updates as the suspects moved down the street to target additional boxes. Instead of receiving news of an en route patrol, Scheff claims the dispatcher seemed more concerned with whether he was following the suspects. He described the experience as deeply discouraging, noting that he was providing a live account of a felony in progress only to be met with a lack of police presence on the scene.
