A Sudden Health Crisis and Brave Final Battle

The singer’s health took a critical turn in September 2025 when he suffered a sudden brain bleed, necessitating an emergency craniotomy. During the procedure, medical professionals discovered melanoma masses on his brain and lungs. Despite an initial recovery that allowed him to begin treatment, DeCarlo suffered a secondary brain bleed that led to a month-long hospitalization through December. His family, including children Annie, Talia, and Tommy Jr., noted that he fought the aggressive disease with "incredible strength" until his final moments, a sentiment echoed by fans who had followed his health updates on social media.

The MySpace Discovery and Rock and Roll Rescue

DeCarlo’s entry into the music industry was nothing short of legendary. In 2007, following the tragic death of Boston’s original vocalist Brad Delp, founding member Tom Scholz discovered DeCarlo’s vocal covers on MySpace. At the time, DeCarlo was working at a Home Depot in North Carolina. Scholz was so impressed by DeCarlo’s ability to capture the band’s signature sound that he invited the self-taught musician to perform at a tribute concert. This led to a permanent role as lead singer, a position DeCarlo held for over a decade, breathing new life into the band and allowing them to tour their classic hits for a new generation.

Tributes from the Boston Family

Tom Scholz, Boston’s lead guitarist and founder, released a poignant statement to PEOPLE describing DeCarlo as a "gentle soul" and a "competitive athlete." Scholz credited DeCarlo with "rescuing" the band in 2007, providing an additional ten years of live performances that would otherwise have been impossible. Scholz highlighted the song "To Be a Man" as one of DeCarlo’s favorites to perform, suggesting that the singer embodied the song's themes of integrity and strength. The bond between the founder and his chosen frontman remained strong until DeCarlo’s forced retirement due to health issues in late 2025.
