The Rise of Deepfake Financial Propaganda
A new wave of sophisticated financial fraud is targeting South Africans by utilizing deepfake technology to impersonate the nation’s highest-ranking officials. Fraudsters have begun circulating fabricated articles and artificial intelligence-generated images that depict high-profile figures, including President Cyril Ramaphosa and Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago, in heated televised confrontations. These non-existent disputes are designed to capture public attention and lend a false sense of urgency and legitimacy to the underlying fraudulent schemes.
The Reserve Bank’s Official Warning
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has taken the unusual step of releasing a formal statement to debunk these specific fabrications. The central bank clarified that Governor Kganyago has never been involved in the televised confrontations depicted in these ads, which often feature him alongside respected media personalities like Bruce Whitfield and Tim Modise. According to the SARB, the articles rely on AI-manipulated quotes and fake testimonials to convince the public that the Governor is endorsing an automated trading platform.
Tactics of the Capital X Trading Scheme
The current scam operation funnels unsuspecting users toward a registration portal for a system known as Capital X. To gain trust, the scammers have designed a website that meticulously mimics the digital layout, fonts, and branding of SABC News. Once on the site, users are confronted with high-pressure tactics, including blinking lights and artificial deadlines, to trigger a fear of missing out. The scheme requires a minimum deposit of R4,100 to activate what is described as an "inside track" AI trading system promising extreme and immediate financial returns.
