The Strategic Entry and Post-World Cup Transition
The formal launch of the new Fox channel is scheduled for May 2026, though the full integration will respect the existing 2026 World Cup broadcasting commitments. Currently, Tigo Sports holds the exclusive rights to 72 of the 104 tournament matches in Costa Rica. To ensure zero disruption for viewers during the world's largest sporting event, the "Tigo Sports" brand will likely remain on screens until the tournament concludes in July 2026. Immediately following the final whistle, the transition to the Fox brand will finalize, utilizing Tigo’s established cable infrastructure as the primary vehicle for market penetration.
Multi-Platform Ambitions: The Arrival of Fox One and Fox+
Fox’s strategy extends far beyond traditional linear television. The corporation has already secured trademarks in Costa Rica for two major digital products: Fox One and Fox+. Fox One, which debuted in the United States in mid-2025, serves as a comprehensive streaming hub, while Fox+ is designed as a dedicated cable signal for live events. This dual-threat approach suggests a move to capture younger, "cord-cutting" demographics in Central America, mirroring the successful rollouts seen in the Mexican market during late 2025. This infrastructure will likely support a wider array of premium content, potentially including the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League, depending on localized licensing negotiations.
Shifting Dynamics in Domestic Football Rights
The acquisition immediately changes the power balance within the Costa Rican Primera División. While the "FUTV" alliance currently controls the rights to major clubs like Saprissa and Alajuelense, Fox will inherit the contracts for Sporting FC, Puntarenas FC, and San Carlos. However, industry insiders suggest this is merely a foothold. Reports indicate that Herediano is poised to be the first major power to jump to the Fox banner. The presence of a global giant provides local clubs with significant leverage and potentially higher valuation for their broadcasting rights, setting the stage for a bidding war once current exclusivity windows expire.
