Strategic Calendar Shift to North America
Formula 2 officials have officially revised the 2026 racing calendar to include inaugural rounds in Miami and Montreal, a move necessitated by the cancellation of the Sakhir and Jeddah events. The addition of these North American venues marks the first time in the history of the championship that the primary feeder series to Formula 1 will compete on that continent. This decision ensures that the championship maintains a consistent schedule following the disruption of the Middle Eastern leg, which was originally slated for April. By integrating these high-profile city circuits, the series aims to maintain competitive momentum while capitalizing on the surging popularity of open-wheel racing in the Western Hemisphere.
Official Dates for Miami and Montreal Debuts
The revised schedule confirms that Formula 2 will join the Formula 1 support bill at the Miami International Autodrome from May 1-3, 2026. This event will serve as the second round of the campaign, providing a high-speed urban backdrop for the sport’s emerging talents. This will be followed closely by the third round at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, scheduled for May 22-24. These two events represent a significant logistical undertaking for the F2 teams, who must now transport equipment and personnel across the Atlantic earlier than originally anticipated. Following the North American swing, the championship will return to its traditional European heartland, resuming at the Circuit de Monaco from June 4-7.
F1 Leadership Applauds Swift Calendar Revision
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, praised the collaboration between the FIA, the F2 organization, and local promoters for securing these replacement rounds on short notice. Domenicali emphasized that while the loss of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian events was regrettable, the opportunity to bring Formula 2 to a burgeoning North American fan base is a major victory for the sport’s ecosystem. He noted that the move was essential to limit the gap in the racing calendar and expressed his gratitude to Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel for facilitating the transition. The inclusion of F2 at these events is expected to provide fans in Florida and Quebec with a more comprehensive and exciting race weekend experience.
