Prominent Edo Politician Severs Ties with Ruling Party

The political landscape in Edo State has shifted significantly following the immediate resignation of Hon. Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma from the All Progressives Congress (APC). A foundation member of the party with roots tracing back to the AC and ACN eras, Agbonayinma announced his decision during a formal press briefing in Benin City on Wednesday. The former lawmaker’s exit marks a notable loss for the APC in the Edo South senatorial district, particularly as the state prepares for the next general election cycle.

Allegations of Internal Marginalization and Undemocratic Influence

Agbonayinma did not mince words regarding his reasons for leaving, characterizing the current state of the APC in his constituency as "deeply distressing." He alleged that the party structure in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government has been hijacked by a few individuals who are "undemocratically interfering" in the political providence of the local chapter. Furthermore, he raised concerns regarding the systemic marginalization of Edo South in terms of political appointments, suggesting that the party has failed to respect the leadership and contributions of its founding members in the region.

Critique of Party Governance and Leadership Structure

The former member of the House of Representatives expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of inclusive democratic institutions. Agbonayinma noted that individuals who previously worked against the APC are now allegedly dictating the party's internal affairs. "I come to the solemn conclusion that it is necessary to take this difficult but inevitable step," he stated, adding that he can no longer remain part of a political organization that he believes has strayed from its foundational principles of purposeful service and democratic strengthening.
