The Verdict in a Decade-Long Financial Crisis
On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Chisinau Court at Buiucani delivered a landmark ruling against Vladimir Plahotniuc, sentencing the former leader of the Democratic Party to 19 years in prison. Plahotniuc was found guilty of leading a criminal organization, large-scale fraud, and money laundering related to the 2014–2015 banking crisis. The "theft of the century" involved the siphoning of approximately $1 billion—equivalent to 12% of Moldova's GDP at the time—from three major lenders: Banca de Economii, Unibank, and Banca Socială. The court also barred Plahotniuc from holding financial management positions for five years following his release and ordered him to pay $60 million in damages to the state.
Personal Enrichment and the Siphoning of Public Funds
Prosecutors successfully argued that Plahotniuc utilized his political and financial influence to coordinate a network that extracted illicit benefits for personal gain. Evidence presented during the trial showed that stolen funds were used to purchase high-value assets, including an Embraer Legacy 650 aircraft and various international properties. Additionally, the siphoned money reportedly covered luxury travel, medical bills, and business investments. Investigators traced $39 million and €3.5 million directly to Plahotniuc through companies controlled by another fugitive oligarch, Ilan Shor, who remains in Moscow.
The Road from Exile to Extradition
Plahotniuc, once known as "the master of Moldova" for his perceived control over the country's judiciary and government, fled the territory in June 2019 after his party was ousted by a coalition led by current President Maia Sandu. After six years evading justice—during which he reportedly resided in 22 different countries, including Turkey—he was arrested at Athens airport in July 2025 while attempting to fly to Dubai. Despite competing extradition requests from Russia, Greek authorities extradited Plahotniuc to Moldova on September 25, 2025. He has remained in preventive detention at Penitentiary No. 13 in Chisinau since his return.
