High-Stakes Arraignment Amidst Tight Security Cordon
The Federal High Court in Kaduna became a fortress on Tuesday morning as Nasir El-Rufai was brought in for his formal arraignment. Arriving at approximately 9:00 a.m. in a secured Hilux vehicle, the former governor was escorted into the courtroom by a joint task force comprising the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Armed personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the NSCDC established a strict perimeter, restricting vehicular movement and creating significant traffic congestion along major access routes near the old Nigerian Defence Academy premises.
Media Shut Out and Restricted Courtroom Access
Despite arriving hours before the proceedings, journalists were barred from entering the courtroom by DSS operatives. The media blackout has drawn criticism from transparency advocates, as the proceedings were held behind closed doors. El-Rufai, dressed in a light green babanriga, remained in his vehicle for half an hour before being ushered into the building. The heavy-handed security approach follows weeks of public pressure regarding the former governor's legal status and the conditions of his detention.
Breakdown of Federal and State Corruption Charges
The ICPC has filed multiple cases against El-Rufai, spanning both federal and state jurisdictions. In the Federal High Court (Suit No: FHC/KD/73/2026), he is charged alongside Joel Adoga with money laundering and the illegal possession of public property. Separately, a case filed in the Kaduna State High Court (KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26) targets El-Rufai and Amadu Sule for alleged abuse of office, fraud, and conferring undue advantage. The commission stated that these charges were officially filed on March 18, 2026, following a series of arrests by the EFCC and subsequent re-arrests by the ICPC.
