Prominent Kano Politician Severs Ties with Ruling Party
Senator Kabiru Gaya, who served as the governor of Kano State during the Third Republic, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress. In a correspondence addressed to the APC ward chairman in Gaya Local Government Area, the veteran lawmaker revealed that his exit follows a period of deep reflection and extensive consultation with his political base. According to Gaya, the decision to leave the party he called home for eight years is intended to serve the best interests of his constituents while aligning with his current personal convictions.
Formal Acknowledgement of a Strategic Exit
The resignation was officially processed through a letter dated April 5, 2026, which was formally received and signed by Adam A. Adam, the chairman of Gaya Arewa Ward. While stepping away from the party leadership, the former senator expressed a sense of gratitude for the opportunities provided by the APC during his tenure. He specifically highlighted the cooperation and camaraderie he experienced over nearly a decade of high level political engagement. Despite the split, Gaya maintains that he remains on cordial terms with major figures in the region, including former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nasir Yusuf Gawuna.
Reflecting on a Decade of Legislative Service
During his time with the governing party, Gaya represented the Kano South Senatorial District in the 9th Assembly, a role he believes allowed him to play a significant part in the development of his region. He noted that the first eight years of his involvement with the APC were marked by a clear adherence to the principles upon which the organization was originally established. However, his recent assessment suggests a growing disconnect between those early ideals and the current administrative direction of the party, prompting his move to the African Democratic Congress.
