Arrest Made Following Delayed Disclosure of Abuse

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the arrest of Jeffrey Owen, a former substitute teacher, on multiple felony counts of sexual abuse. The investigation began after a child came forward with allegations of misconduct that took place during the 2021-2022 academic year. Shortly after the initial report, the child’s sibling came forward with similar allegations. Sheriff Falon Hurst stated that the parents filed an official report with the Weaver Police Department, which subsequently determined the incidents occurred on the campus of Weaver Elementary School.

Employment Status and Staffing Agency Coordination

According to Sheriff Hurst, Owen was not a direct employee of the Calhoun County School Board. Instead, he was employed by an external agency responsible for hiring and managing substitute teachers for local districts. Calhoun County Superintendent Tony Willis clarified that while Owen had worked within the district "years ago," he has not been authorized to be on any campus for a significant period. This distinction in employment has prompted investigators to look closer at the vetting processes used by third party staffing firms and the oversight provided for temporary educational staff.

Investigative Scope Extends to Additional School Locations

While the current charges are linked specifically to Weaver Elementary, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is working to establish a complete timeline of Owen’s employment history. At this stage, officials are unsure of the full list of schools Owen may have worked at or the exact date his employment as a substitute was terminated. Because a School Resource Officer (SRO) is stationed at Weaver Elementary, the case was forwarded to the sheriff’s office to utilize specialized resources for crimes against children. Investigators are currently reviewing old school logs and agency records to identify other potential areas of concern.
