Inmate Faces Decades of Additional Prison Time Following Federal Plea

A 47,year,old inmate currently serving time in the Florida Department of Corrections has entered a guilty plea in federal court for new crimes committed while behind bars. Edward G. Winn admitted to one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of receipt of child pornography during proceedings in Tallahassee. John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, announced the plea, noting that federal authorities will continue to aggressively prosecute those who facilitate the online sexual exploitation of minors.

Prison Issued Technology Utilized for Illicit Material Distribution

The criminal activity took place while Winn was an inmate at the Madison Correctional Institution between May and July of 2024. According to court documents, the defendant managed to use a prison, issued tablet to access the internet and receive prohibited content. Further investigation revealed that Winn did not merely possess the material but also distributed the files to other inmates within the correctional facility. This breach of security protocols allowed for the continued circulation of abuse material within the state prison system.

Digital Forensic Search Uncovers Hundreds of Exploitative Images

A comprehensive search of the defendant's digital device by federal agents led to the recovery of nearly 400 images depicting the sexual abuse of children. Investigative reports indicate that some of the recovered media featured victims as young as infants, highlighting the extreme nature of the material accessed by the inmate. The discovery was made through a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Florida Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General, aiming to curb the secondary victimization of children through digital sharing.
