Emergency Response on Russell Road
The first alarm was raised at approximately 8:30 pm when emergency crews were dispatched to a property on Russell Road. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a garage well-involved in flames. While crews worked to contain the initial blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighboring dwellings, two additional reports of structural fires in the immediate area were received. The rapid succession of the calls forced a significant deployment of resources to the Manurewa area to manage multiple active scenes simultaneously.
Extensive Damage to Local Residences
The impact of the Friday night fires has been described by FENZ officials as severe. Beyond the initial garage fire, the two subsequent structural blazes caused extensive damage to two homes. While no injuries were immediately reported, the fires have left the affected buildings with substantial structural compromise. Fire investigators remained on-site through the night and into the following morning to conduct a detailed forensic examination of the points of origin and to search for any evidence of accelerants.
Investigation into Potential Links
A primary focus for investigators is determining whether the three fires are connected. The fact that all three incidents occurred within a narrow timeframe and in the same general vicinity has raised red flags for fire services and police. Currently, FENZ has stated it remains "unclear" if the fires were the result of a coordinated effort, but the suspicious nature of the timing has led to increased patrols and a call for public vigilance in the Manurewa community.
