Interception and Identification
Early Sunday morning, the Finnish Air Force detected several slow-moving objects flying at low altitudes over southeastern Finland and its maritime borders. In response, F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets were scrambled to identify the craft. One of the objects was confirmed to be a Ukrainian AN196 drone. The Finnish Air Force stated that pilots refrained from opening fire to avoid collateral damage. Ultimately, two drones crashed in eastern Finland, one near the town of Kouvola.
The Role of Electronic Warfare
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo characterized the drift of these drones into Finnish airspace as a "very serious issue." He attributed the navigational errors to Russia’s extensive electronic jamming capabilities. These "spoofing" and jamming techniques interfere with the GPS and guidance systems of UAVs, causing them to stray from their intended flight paths toward Russian targets. Similar incidents were reported last week in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, where stray Ukrainian drones also crashed after losing their bearings.
Strategic Context: The Baltic Oil War
The drone activity is part of an intensified Ukrainian campaign to cripple Russia’s war economy by targeting critical energy infrastructure. In recent weeks, Ukraine has successfully struck three major Russian oil ports:
