While the couple initially sought to understand the community, their focus shifted toward criminal investigation as evidence of systemic abuse surfaced. In November 2021, Marie captured a critical clandestine recording during a car ride with Bateman and several victims. In the audio, Bateman explicitly admitted to facilitating and overseeing the sexual abuse of underage girls as young as nine years old during what he termed "Atonement" ceremonies. This recording provided federal authorities with the irrefutable evidence needed to verify the scope of the group's illegal activities.

Coordinated FBI Operations and a Staged Raid

Following the discovery of the abuse ring, Marie and Katas transitioned into formal roles as FBI informants for several months. Their cooperation culminated in a high-stakes operation on September 13, 2022, where Katas assisted agents by arranging a meeting with Bateman under the pretext of a filming session. This maneuver allowed federal agents to apprehend the sect leader without incident, leading to a subsequent guilty plea for conspiracy to kidnap and transport minors for criminal sexual activity.
