Severe Weather Triggers Coastal Inundation Warnings

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a formal coastal inundation alert for several southern regions as unstable weather conditions continue to threaten maritime and shorefront communities. The warning specifically targets the Coral Coast–Sigatoka region, the Mamanuca Islands, Kadavu, and the southern Lau Group. According to the weather office, these areas are at an elevated risk of sea flooding, primarily driven by a slow-moving trough of low pressure that is currently situated over the islands.

Interaction of Low Pressure and Southwesterly Swells

The current threat is exacerbated by moderate southwesterly swells that have been generated by a weather system located far to the south of Fiji. These swells are interacting with the local low-pressure trough to push sea levels higher than usual along southern exposures. Meteorological officials have specified that coastal sea flooding is most likely to occur during periods of high tide, as the combined force of the swell and tidal surge overcomes natural and artificial coastal barriers.

Nationwide Forecast of Occasional Showers and Thunderstorms

Beyond the immediate coastal threat, the forecast for the rest of the country remains unsettled. Much of Fiji can expect occasional showers throughout the day, with a heightened possibility of thunderstorms and isolated heavy rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours. These conditions are a result of the persistent trough, which continues to draw moisture across the group, creating atmospheric instability that is typical for this time of year.
