Government Proposes Local Access To British Education
The Federal Government of Nigeria is moving forward with plans to host a local campus of Coventry University through a Transnational Education framework. According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, the initiative is designed to allow Nigerian students to obtain globally recognized United Kingdom degrees without leaving the country. This strategy aims to expand access to high quality education for Nigeria's large youth population while reducing the financial and logistical burdens typically associated with international study.
Institutional Opposition From Academic Staff Union
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has formally registered its opposition to the proposed establishment of the British campus. ASUU President Christopher Piwuna characterized the move as unacceptable during a public lecture at Sa’adu Zungur University. The union alleges that inviting foreign institutions to operate locally could undermine the existing Nigerian university system and reflects an asymmetry in global education where Nigeria is treated primarily as a market rather than a strategic partner.
Risks Of Creating A Two Tier Education System
A primary concern surrounding the policy is the potential for institutionalizing a divide within the nation’s higher education sector. Critics suggest that wealthy families may gravitate toward foreign branded institutions, leaving the majority of the population in underfunded public universities. This shift could exacerbate social inequality by creating disparate levels of opportunity and employability based on the type of institution a student can afford, rather than their academic merit or potential.
