Strategic Imperatives for National Sugar Security
The Federal Government has intensified its oversight of the industrial sector by setting a definitive production milestone for the Dangote Sugar Refinery. During a high level visit to the refinery complex in Numan, Senator John Owan Enoh stated that the subsidiary must expand its annual output to 600,000 metric tonnes by 2030. This mandate is viewed as a critical component of the Nigeria Sugar Master Plan, which seeks to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported sugar. According to the minister, the current output remains significantly lower than the nearly 2 million metric tonnes required to satisfy the domestic market annually.
Accelerating the Backward Integration Programme
Accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council, Kamar Bakrin, the minister conducted a thorough assessment of the ongoing infrastructure projects at the Numan site. The inspection specifically focused on the advancement of the new 6000 TCD plant, which is intended to serve as a cornerstone for increased local processing. According to Enoh, the scale of investment observed at the facility reflects a tangible commitment to the objectives of the Backward Integration Programme, a policy designed to encourage domestic cultivation and refining.
Presidential Mandate for Industrial Growth
The push for increased capacity is rooted in direct instructions from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has frequently prioritized sugar sector development during Federal Executive Council sessions. The minister noted that the government’s frequent engagement with industry stakeholders is a testament to the seriousness with which it views agricultural self sufficiency. According to the ministerial address, the Dangote Group is expected to sustain the 600,000 metric tonne output level beyond 2030 to ensure long term stability in the national food supply chain.
