The federal government is weighing a strategic pivot toward domestic fuel production as the conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt international oil shipments. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed on Thursday that his administration is "looking at all options" to increase refining capacity, particularly for diesel. The move is a direct response to the vulnerability exposed by Australia's heavy reliance on foreign fuel, which currently accounts for nearly 90% of the national supply.

Speaking at the National Press Club, the Prime Minister argued that economic relationships are now inextricably linked to national security. He noted that the government has already demonstrated a willingness to intervene in the market through critical mineral reserves and smelter bailouts. The shift toward a more "self-reliant" model marks a significant departure from previous decades of reliance on cheaper, globalized fuel markets that have now been destabilized by the Iran conflict.

The Conservative Push for Domestic Drilling

While the government focuses on refining, the Opposition and conservative crossbenchers are demanding an immediate increase in domestic extraction. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson described the current situation as a "hell of a mess," pointing out that Australia has declined from eight refineries in 2000 to just two today. Senator Hanson called for the government to scrap its green energy agenda in favor of intensive oil and gas drilling to protect national sovereignty and support struggling small businesses.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor echoed these sentiments, criticizing the Prime Minister’s calls for citizens to limit fuel consumption and utilize public transport. Taylor argued that the federal budget must be used to build resilience through increased resource extraction rather than "lecturing" Australians on their personal habits. The Opposition's "drill more" stance reflects a broader debate on whether the path to energy security lies in traditional fossil fuel expansion or modernized refining and renewable transitions.
