Presidential Directive Formalizes Land Rights for Indigenous Abuja Leadership
In a significant policy shift aimed at strengthening ties with grassroots leaders, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has officially allocated land parcels to members of the FCT Council of Traditional Rulers. According to the minister, this decision was executed under a direct mandate from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to extend a hand of fellowship to the territory's indigenous authorities. Wike emphasized that the administration recognizes the unique status of those who occupied the land prior to the creation of the FCT, asserting that providing land is a necessary gesture of honor for those who facilitate regional peace.
Total Waiver of Statutory Fees Acknowledges Ancestral Land Tenure
In addition to the physical allocations, the minister announced a complete waiver of all statutory fees usually required for land titles. Wike noted that it would be fundamentally unfair to demand large financial payments from traditional rulers for lands that their ancestors have inhabited for generations. According to the official announcement, the President explicitly instructed that these leaders should not be burdened with the task of raising funds for these specific titles. This waiver is intended to simplify the formalization of land ownership for the council members without imposing a secondary financial strain on the traditional institutions.
Logistical Support and Utility Vehicles Promised for Traditional Duties
Beyond land administration, the FCT administration has pledged to enhance the operational capacity of traditional rulers through the provision of new utility vehicles. The minister stated that these resources are essential to enable leaders to perform their community duties more effectively across the various area councils. This support is framed as a reward for the council’s contribution to the most peaceful Area Council elections in the history of the territory. According to Wike, providing mobility to these figures is a strategic investment in the continued stability and governance of the FCT’s satellite towns and rural areas.
