Protest Escalation and Arrests

The incident occurred during a dueling protest outside Gracie Mansion involving far-right activist Jake Lang and counterprotesters. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Kayumi and Balat confronted the anti-Islam demonstrators and deployed at least one explosive device. Witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames as the device traveled through the air, eventually striking a barrier near several police officers. While no injuries were reported, the NYPD noted the potential for serious harm or death.

FBI Raids and Terrorism Probe

On Sunday, federal agents executed search warrants at Kayumi’s residence in Newtown and Balat’s home in Langhorne. During the searches, agents detained a male at the Newtown location and took two males and one female into custody at the Langhorne site. The investigation shifted to a terrorism probe after sources indicated that the suspects admitted to viewing ISIS-related content. Neighbors in the quiet Pennsylvania suburbs expressed shock and fear at the possibility that explosives were being manufactured in a nearby residential home.

Ongoing Forensic Examination

The NYPD Bomb Squad is currently analyzing the recovered IEDs and a suspicious device found Sunday in a vehicle on East End Avenue. Investigators are working to confirm if additional devices were manufactured or if the suspects were acting as part of a larger network. Both Kayumi and Balat remain in custody as federal and local authorities coordinate on potential charges related to explosives and domestic terrorism.
