Violence Erupts in Austin Entertainment District
A violent assault unfolded early Sunday morning outside Buford’s, a popular beer garden located in Austin’s West Sixth Street entertainment district. At approximately 02:00 local time, a suspect identified as Ndiaga Diagne initiated a targeted attack by firing a pistol from a slow moving SUV with its hazard lights activated, striking several people on the patio and sidewalk. According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, the assailant subsequently parked his vehicle and approached the establishment on foot while armed with a rifle. Three police officers on patrol in the high traffic area confronted the suspect at a nearby intersection, fatally shooting him and ending the immediate threat.
Federal Investigation and Terrorism Indicators
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has moved to lead the inquiry into the shooter’s motives after identifying specific evidence suggesting a nexus to terrorism. Acting Special Agent in Charge Alex Doran of the FBI’s San Antonio office stated that investigators discovered indicators both within the suspect’s SUV and on his person that justify the terrorism classification. While officials have not yet released specific details regarding the evidence found, sources familiar with the ongoing probe noted that Diagne was wearing a sweatshirt inscribed with the words "Property of Allah" during the attack. The suspect has been described as a naturalized American citizen originally born in Senegal.
Casualties and Emergency Response Efforts
The shooting resulted in three confirmed deaths, including the gunman, and sent 14 survivors to local hospitals with varying degrees of injury. Rob Luckritz, head of Austin-Travis County Emergency Management Services, confirmed that three of the hospitalized victims remain in critical condition following the assault. Witnesses at the scene described a horrific environment, with one bystander reporting seeing eight bodies on the floor immediately after the gunfire erupted. Despite the carnage, city leaders praised the efficiency of the first responders, noting that police and emergency medical teams arrived at the scene in just 57 seconds, a speed credited with preventing a higher death toll.
