Dismantling Barriers to Romantic Autonomy
For decades, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have faced systemic exclusion from sexuality and relationship education. Societal misconceptions often infantilize adults with IDD, assuming they lack either the desire or the capacity for romantic connection. This lack of formal education leaves a vulnerable population without the necessary tools to navigate consent, boundaries, and digital safety. The FAU College of Education study addresses this gap by asserting that relationship education is a matter of fundamental dignity and equality, providing a replicable framework for inclusive learning.
The Mechanics of Video Modeling Intervention
The researchers developed a comprehensive training program consisting of 80 videos. These scenarios were meticulously categorized into four distinct domains:
In-person Verbal: Navigating conversations and verbal cues in physical settings.
In-person Physical: Recognizing boundaries and appropriate touch.
