A Tragic Sacrifice in Uneda
The quiet residential neighborhood near Kanazawa Technical High School became the site of a harrowing tragedy early Monday morning. At approximately 1:24 AM, a fire erupted at the wooden residence of 91-year-old Akira Amano. Eyewitness reports suggest a heroic but fatal turn of events: Amano’s son, aged in his 50s, successfully exited the burning building but immediately ran back into the flames to reach his mother, who was in her 80s and reportedly suffered from limited mobility due to chronic back pain. Neither the son nor the mother survived.
Casualties and Survivors
Firefighters discovered the remains of two individuals within the charred wreckage of the two-story home. While formal identification is pending, they are presumed to be the wife and son of Akira Amano. Akira himself managed to escape the inferno but sustained burns to his face. Neighbors reported that the elderly man had tried to re-enter the house as well, but was physically restrained by bystanders for his own safety. He was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Investigation Into the Origin
A joint investigation by the Kanazawa police and fire bureau determined that the blaze began in the southwest corner of a first-floor tatami room. Investigators noted that the area contained various electronic devices and a kotatsu (a low, heated table), though a definitive cause has not yet been established. The fire was particularly aggressive due to the wooden construction of the home, taking nearly three hours to fully extinguish.
