Fatal Drive-By Shooting In Back Of The Yards Leaves One Teenager Dead And Another Man Critically Wounded

Ambush on South Justine Street
Violence erupted in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side shortly after midnight on Monday. At approximately 12:45 a.m., two young men were sitting inside a parked vehicle in the 5000 block of South Justine Street. According to Chicago Police, a dark-colored sedan pulled up alongside them, and two individuals exited the vehicle or leaned out to open fire on the stationary car. The shooters then sped away from the scene before police arrived.
Casualties and Emergency Response
The 19 year old victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to various parts of his body and was found unresponsive by responding officers. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The 20 year old victim was struck in the back during the hail of gunfire. Paramedics rushed him to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Forensic investigators recovered numerous shell casings surrounding the bullet-riddled vehicle as they worked to identify the caliber of weapons used in the attack.
Ongoing Investigation and Search for Suspects
Area One detectives are currently leading the homicide investigation, but no suspects have been taken into custody as of Monday afternoon. Police have not yet released a more detailed description of the shooters or a specific make and model for the dark-colored sedan involved in the drive-by. Investigators are canvassing the neighborhood for residential security camera footage that may have captured the vehicle's arrival or its escape route toward Garfield Boulevard or 51st Street.
