Fatal Collision South of Christchurch Claims One Life; SH1 Reopened
One person is dead and another remains in a serious condition following a two-vehicle collision on SH1 south of Burnham. Police are investigating the cause.

Incident and Immediate Response
The crash took place at approximately 7:30 am on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Telegraph Road, south of Burnham. Hato Hone St John launched a massive response, dispatching two ambulances, a first response unit, an operations manager, a critical care paramedic, and a rescue helicopter.
Upon arrival, emergency crews found two people trapped within the wreckage of the vehicles. Despite the efforts of first responders, one individual was confirmed dead at the scene.
Medical Evacuation and Condition
A second victim was successfully extricated and transported to Christchurch Hospital via helicopter. Their condition was described by medical officials as serious. No other occupants were reported to be involved in the collision.
