Strengthening the Circular Economy Through Education

The FABE Foundation International has solidified its partnership with the Lagos State Government to address pressing environmental challenges through a specialized focus on youth education. At the 2026 EcoSchoolsNG Youth Climate and Circular Economy Summit, stakeholders gathered to emphasize the critical role of the younger generation in driving sustainable practices across Nigeria's commercial hub. According to Michael Bankole, representing the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, this initiative is a vital component of the state's broader strategy to integrate environmental awareness into the formal education system. The collaboration aims to move beyond simple awareness by fostering a culture of practical innovation among students.

Complementing Policy with Grassroots Innovation

Lagos State officials highlighted that legislative actions, such as the ban on Styrofoam and single use plastics, require supporting innovations to be truly effective. The EcoSchoolsNG program seeks to fill this gap by teaching students the technical skills required for recycling and upcycling. By transforming waste into valuable products, these young "Eco Ambassadors" are providing the system with the creative solutions needed to manage resource loops effectively. Bankole noted that while the state sets the policy framework, the students are expected to bring the fresh perspectives necessary to solve complex urban environmental issues that no single government policy can address alone.

The Multiplier Effect of Early Environmental Advocacy

One of the core philosophies of the FABE Foundation’s approach is the belief that children act as primary catalysts for behavioral change within their homes and wider communities. By instilling sustainable values in students, the program creates role models who can influence their peers and family members to adopt cleaner habits. This educational model recognizes that children are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change, despite Africa contributing less than four percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. The summit reinforced the idea that students are not merely the leaders of the future but are active participants in current environmental solutions.
