Chaos Errupts During Large Scale Parking Lot Confrontation
The Evansville Police Department responded to a volatile scene early Saturday morning at the Washington Square retail area. Upon arrival at the parking lot of KC’s Time Out Lounge, responding officers encountered a crowd of approximately twenty to thirty spectators gathered to watch an active physical altercation. The atmosphere was described as high tension as the crowd surrounded two primary combatants, creating a logistical challenge for the initial patrol units attempting to de-escalate the situation and disperse the unauthorized gathering.
Visual Evidence Leads to Immediate Pursuit
During the intervention, officers reportedly witnessed Trezhaun Smith deliver two distinct strikes to the facial area of another man while the victim was on the ground. When law enforcement personnel commanded Smith to cease his actions and submit to questioning, the suspect chose to evade authorities by initiating a high speed foot escape. This action shifted the police response from scene management to an active pursuit through the surrounding residential blocks as Smith attempted to utilize the darkness and local terrain to lose the chasing officers.
Apprehension and Defensive Claims on Monroe Avenue
The pursuit concluded several blocks away on Monroe Avenue, where Evansville officers successfully intercepted and detained Smith. Following his arrest, the thirty one year old provided a statement to investigators alleging that his actions were a direct response to a vehicular assault. Smith claimed that the victim had previously attempted to run him over with a car, and that the physical fight only commenced once the other individual exited the vehicle. This narrative is currently being weighed against the eyewitness accounts of the officers who arrived during the peak of the battery.
